How to get a starting salary that you deserve

What to do if you are offered a starting salary that is way below what you deserve?

Here is how you could frame a response

First:

Start with gratitude

“Thank you for the offer”

Second:

Share something positive

“I’m excited about the prospects of joining the company…”

Third

Reinforce that the offer is too low based on the market value

“The offer is well below what I consider to be market value for my skills and experience…”

Four:

Remind them of key achievements and strengths

“I’ve achieved X,Y & Z and bring strengths in A, B & C”

Five:

Share what you believe you deserve

“Based on the evaluation of the market and my track record, I believe the position would be worth between $X & $Y” (always give a range)

  • You want to anchor higher, starting at a minimum of 10% more than what you’re aiming for!

And most importantly use the 24 hour rule

Always ask for 24 hours to think about it.

I’ve known companies to magically dig up an extra $10–15k when they feel they may lose you.

Good Luck!
